Happy Valentine's Day!

This was my blog entry from last Valentine's Day, but I think it's worth posting again. It still holds true. Since I don't usually post on the weekends, I'm sharing it with you today.

I wanted to wish everyone out there a Happy Valentine's Day. I happened to read 'Dear Abby' this morning in my local paper, and there was a man who wrote in saying that, when he was young, Valentine cards were given out to everyone in class during school. I remember that, too.

Then, he said, as he got older he found that he was told that there were only certain people who he should give his affection to. There were gender lines. There were racial lines. Not everyone was 'good enough' to get a Valentine.

Now he wants to share the spirit of Valentine's Day and the affection that comes with it with everyone. It shouldn't matter if you're rich or pretty or popular or none of those things. What matters is that human beings should care about each other and love each other. Always. No matter what day of the year it is.

I don't have a 'special someone' in a romantic way to share my feelings with, but I have a mother, a father, and a daughter whom I dearly love. They are my Valentines. It's all I need, but yet I think of the people out there who have no one at all -- the poor, the homeless, the elderly, the sick, the dying, the mentally ill. They deserve to be someone's Valentine, too.

So, in the spirit of that man's letter I wish all of you out there a Happy Valentine's Day. May you have love and joy in your heart today and every day, and may you know that someone out there DOES care about you, even when there is no direct physical evidence.

Just because you can't see love and caring and affection with your eyes doesn't mean it's not out there. There's plenty. Now go and spread it around.
